Nikki Hayes

Assistant Principal, Ruma Whitu, Year 5

Kia Ora everyone, my name is Nikki Hayes and I joined Don Buck Primary School in 2021. I absolutely love being a teacher and I know I have the best job. Learning alongside amazing children is the best work environment I could ask for. In my spare time I play Netball and also Play and Umpire Hockey. I hope I can inspire the next generation to love being lifelong learners.

What do you enjoy most about working at our school?

The Children! Everything I do as a teacher is always for the children. I want them to have the best experiences possible. I want to provide them all the opportunities that can possibly be provided in the primary setting.

How do you keep your students engaged and motivated in learning?

Happiness! I work hard on building relationships with each child. I focus on their interests and build from them. I love my job and I believe the children can tell that, so if I am focused on what’s being learnt they are too. “what we learn with pleasure we never forget.” Alfred Mercier.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

In my spare time it is no secret I am on some sort of sporting field. I have played a high level of hockey my whole life which is now a high level of umpiring. I enjoy playing Netball and starting up our school netball teams motivated me to join myself up to a club last year. Both of those sports are winter sports so in the summer time you can find me out on the golf course.
