Heydon Hohaia

Deputy Principal. Kura Tuakana Lead, Technology Lead

Tena koutou whānau! KoTapua Heydon Hohaia toku ingoa, my name is Tapua Heydon Hohaia and I am really excited to be a part of our Don Buck school whānau. I have a young family with two tiny kids, that keep me and my wife on our toes. Music, art, exploring movies and stories are what I absolutely love to do and bring to the way I connect with tamariki. I truly believe that school should be a place filled with energy, excitement and experiences and I can’t wait to build that together. I can’t wait to connect with you all!

What do you enjoy most about working at our school?

The Don Buck School community is a tight whānau. A crew that backs each other and will do what they can to see the team succeed. I love working in an environment like this! There is a joy in the kids that come to our kura and seeing the colour growing and the positive vibe flowing across all that step foot into our school is inspiring each day.

How do you keep your students engaged and motivated in learning?

Everyone has something exceptional that they bring with them. A love for sport, a talent for art, a confidence in dance, music and drama. To connect with our kids and learn about what they love to do and build the learning around this is the key to keeping engaged learners connected at school. It makes the work we do as teachers so exciting and forever changing as we welcome new tamariki into our lives.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

I am an absolute lover of music, from playing guitar, singing, listening and attempting to write my own songs. Music brings great joy to my life and I can’t have a moment without music flowing around me, it inspires me and motivates me. I play in a band that plays around Auckland and always enjoy entertaining people with music. I also have 2 epic little kids who keep me busy, and motivate me to do the best I can in all I do.
